Emmarentia Road Rage Shooting: Why the NPA is not prosecuting Emmarentia road-rage shooter

Emmarentia Road Rage Shooting: The wife of Zawar Faisal Ul Rehman, who was fatally shot in an alleged road rage incident in Emmarentia, Johannesburg, has been accused of escalating the confrontation moments before and after the shooting. According to a warning statement submitted to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the 58-year-old suspect claims the woman initially fired the first shot during the altercation.

The statement further alleges that after her husband was shot and collapsed, she picked up the firearm he had discharged and attempted to shoot the other driver. These claims form part of the suspect’s defence, which also includes video footage and a detailed timeline of events handed to authorities on Tuesday.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, resulted in the death of Ul Rehman and left his wife hospitalized with injuries. Police confirmed that a motorist was arrested in connection with the shooting and is currently under investigation.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the confrontation began as a traffic dispute along Barry Hertzog Avenue, where both vehicles were reportedly attempting to overtake each other. Tensions escalated when the two male drivers exited their vehicles and engaged in a physical fight. Witnesses say Ul Rehman’s wife intervened during the altercation, and at some point retrieved a firearm from their car.

This reportedly prompted the second driver to draw his own weapon, leading to the fatal exchange of gunfire. A video of the incident, which has since circulated widely online, shows the disturbing sequence of events as they unfolded in public view. Tragically, the couple’s children were present and witnessed the violent encounter.

Investigations remain ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
