Hampden Accident: Tragedy struck in North Otago today, as a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Mile Flat Road and State Highway 1 near Hampden resulted in one fatality. The accident occurred around 2:15 pm, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.

Hato Hone St John confirmed that multiple units responded to the scene, including two ambulances, two rescue helicopters, a first response team, and an operations manager. Despite their swift efforts, police reported that “one person was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Two other patients were airlifted to Dunedin Public Hospital. One was in serious condition, while the other sustained minor injuries. The crash has caused significant disruptions, with State Highway 1/Herbert-Hampden Road initially closed to traffic.

In recent updates, one lane of SH1 at the Mile Flat Road intersection has been partially reopened, allowing limited access for vehicles. Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine what led to the collision.
